DC Studios Confirm Green Lantern TV Series For HBO
James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed the development of the live-action TV series for DC Comics' Green Lantern.

HBO has officially given the green light to Lanterns, marking it as the first-ever live-action series produced under DC Studios, led by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. According to Variety, the series has received an eight-episode straight-to-series order. Inspired by the popular DC comic Green Lantern, the show will prominently feature characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan. These two members of the Green Lantern Corps are entrusted with the formidable task of protecting the cosmos using their extraordinary powers.

This time, the series will delve into a dark, terrestrial mystery involving a murder in middle America. “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the official description reads.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Green Lantern series began developing around five years ago with Greg Berlanti as producer. However, an extensive overhaul led to more delays. With positive developments, John Stewart, who happens to be DC Comics’ first Black superhero, will take centre stage now.

The formal casting for the HBO series is yet to be announced.

More On Green Lantern’s Eight-Part Series

During a press conference, Gunn and Safran, in a joint statement, said, “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Notably, the series will mark a significant addition to the HBO Originals on the lines of the broader DC Universe as envisioned by James Gunn and Peter Safran. While Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios will produce the series, Mundy, Lindelof and King have joined as executive producers and writers.

Speaking about the iconic DC character, John Stewart is the Green Lantern of New Earth, the third to take up the ring after Hal Jordan and Alan Scott. The character first appeared in Green Lantern #87 and is also an esteemed member of the Justice League of America.
