How Stranger Things Revived Nostalgia With 80s fashion
It is not just the music, but the fashion itself has been deployed by the makers of Stranger Things as a key tool to recreate the bygone era.

Netflix’s Stranger Things has introduced not just a riveting story and characters but also plucked the nostalgia strings with its eighties timeline. The show set in the hip era of the eighties when mullets, denim, and walkmen were all the rage has certainly inspired modern viewers. It is not just the music, but the fashion itself that has been deployed by the makers of the show as a key tool to recreate the bygone era. Let us take a look at how fashion plays a pivotal role in making Stranger Things the hit show that it is today.

Series costume designer Amy Parris told Netflix Tudum that the latest season of the show featured a lot more plaid and more autumn colours on the Hawkins people, so they stand out against the sun-bleached, bright colours of California. “Hawkins, Indiana, is a little more drab, a little bit more old-fashioned — in California, you see the surfer style and the skater style,” she said.

With this season, viewers saw the rise of Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn. The actor embodied the eighties rock and roll style with denim outfits and the “Hellfire Club” logo along with the unforgettable mullet. Sharing her take on how she dressed Munson, Parris told Tudum, “He’s wearing one thing, because he’s in that outfit the whole time, so I really focused and zeroed in on making sure everything in that outfit was authentic.”

Parris added that Munson is a fan of wizard metal, Dio and Metallica. She also revealed that Dio was a popular band in the ’80s, and she reached out to the estate of the late Ronnie James Dio to source a band shirt. Parris told Tudum that Ronnie’s wife is in charge of his estate and offered to send them vintage T-shirts for the show.

Meanwhile, Parris also mentioned that the show creators, the Duffer brothers often collaborate with her when making costume decisions.
