West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called the inauguration of Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22 an “election gimmick”.
“Yesterday, I was asked about Ram Mandir… I believe in a festival which takes everyone together, talks about everyone… Do whatever you want, it is a gimmick before the elections. Do it, I have no problem but disregarding people of other communities is not right… I will never allow discrimination between Hindus and Muslims as long as I live…”
While reports suggested that Banerjee may not attend the inauguration, the statement made it clear that she will project this as BJP’s poll gimmick ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Banerjee is part of the Opposition alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
She sent out a strong message to her minority voters and the BJP without touching upon the topic of Ram or devotion.
Experts also say that this is the reason why she mentioned that she will not allow any division in Bengal. She promised this in the name of Ishwar and Allah so that this is acceptable to all .
The TMC’s pitch is Bengal is for all and all religions stay there together.
BJP’s Suvendu Adhikary, however, asked what Banerjee has done for Hindus.
