KOCHI: The city police is all set to install automated cameras with speed sensors to take snapshots of over-speeding vehicles and violators of traffic signal rules. The cameras will be first installed at Palarivattom Junction and Kakkanad. Later, the project will be extended to other parts of the city.T J Thomas, Road Transport Officer said that the camera is developed by Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation. “The high-tech device have vehicle speed detection radars, night vision enabled cameras with zoom-in capability, powerful flash lights and traffic signal violation sensors. The device supports at least three flash light equipped cameras. When its sensors detect over-speeding or traffic signal violation, the cameras automatically take several long and close shots of the errant vehicle including its registration number plate,” T J Thomas said. “The device automatically captures traffic violations and relays the images and information to the police control room through a secure cable network. These cameras are powered to detect violation of traffic-lane discipline, parking laws, use of mobile phones while driving, stopping vehicles at zebra lines, one-way route violations and wrong side movement of vehicles,” Thomas said. The cops can avail themselves of the details of the vehicle from the computerised data bank of the regional transport office to identify its owner. The digital evidence will be preserved in a police server, enabling enforcers to slap traffic fines on errant motorists and prosecute them in courts. According to Assistant Commissioner (Control Room) K S Vijayappan, the automated cameras cost around `2 lakh. “The whole city will be brought under the camera surveillance by the end of this year” Vijayappan said.
