Dhenkenal (Orissa): Three women in Orissa's Dhenkanal district killed a noted criminal after he attempted to rape one of them. They are now in jail.
Though the police admit that the killing was an act of self-defence, all three women were arrested and sent to judicial custody.
Twenty-one-year-old Jema Tiria and her 18-month-old baby have already spent four days behind bars.
She was arrested along with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law for killing a noted criminal in the area, when he attempted to rape her.
The women then threw his body in a well. Jema has no regrets and maintains that the act was performed in self defence.
The local people and women activists in the area are protesting against their arrest.
"The women killed him due to self defense. They should be awarded rather than getting arrested for killing this criminal. We will protest against their arrests," Lily Lenka, an activist said.
Despite this, the police treated the case just like any other murder case and promptly arrested the three women.
Police now say it is up to the court to decide their fate.
"We have made the arrests and now it is for the court to decide what to do with the women," G C Mahapatra, DSP, Dhenkanal.
