Lucknow: As per the figures released by the UP Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, state’s secondary education board, the official number of students who have skipped the UP Board exams till date is 10,44,619. This is being attributed to the strict measures adopted by the Yogi Adityanath government to break the backbone of copying mafia which has been prevalent in the state for quite some time. Also, as per official figures, highest number of candidates leaving the examination are being reported from Azamgarh, Deoria, Ghazipur, Hardoi, etc.
However, the methodology used to collect this data has raised questions and now opposition is alleging that such huge numbers are issued under government pressure so that the government can term it as their achievement. Speaking to News18, Congress Spokesperson, Zishan Haider said, “Every year almost 10% students skip UP Board exams and it is not an achievement to boast off. Strict measures for cheating are welcome, but at the same time playing with figures is also not good. First of all, it should be checked how they are compiling the data, and if they are just giving consolidated data or have given any details also. And even if we accept for a moment that more than 10 lakh students have skipped exams due to strict measures of the government, then it is matter of concern and shame for the government. Instead of improving the education system in their 10 months of governance, they have established a fear in the minds of students. There is absolutely nothing to go chest thumping about.”
Raising questions over governance and education system in the state, Samajwadi Party, Spokesperson, Sunil Singh Sajan said it is the responsibility of the government if more than 10 lakh students are skipping exams. Taking a jibe at Yogi Adityanath government in the state, Sajan said, “What will these 10 lakh students do? Will they sell pakodas like our PM suggested for the youth of the country? And if so many pakoda stalls come up in the state then who will eat pakodas?”
“The way they are inflating figures it seems that the entire 65 lakhs will leave the examination, their methodology is doubtful. On the other hand Deputy CM is doing inspections by helicopter and establishing a fear amongst students. Cheating in exams is not acceptable at any cost, but what Deputy CM is doing in the name of inspection and creating an environment of fear among students is not good. When CCTV is installed everywhere then why is Deputy CM going by himself? Where were CCTVs when preparations were done for last one year, why the government did not keep a vigil on people who were busy filling two or three forms for the same student?,” asked Sunil Singhj Sajan.
Speaking to news18, Secretary of UP Board Nina Srivastava said that the data released by the board of students who have missed exams is a compiled data and details of it are not available at the moment, “The data we receive from our centres is compiled and released, at the moment date and center wise details of the data are not to ascertain on which day how many students left the exam. The methodology we have adopted does not allow a single roll number to be repeated. Initially, we were also surprised by the figures, but we have made sure that the roll numbers are not repeated in the absentee list.”
Spokesperson of the UP Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh, RP Mishra, said the real issue remains the same always, which is around 30,000 unregistered schools which are running illegally in the state due to nexus between copying mafia and officials of the concerned department. “Action should be taken against these institutions who register as many as 500 students in a single class as against the rule of 80 to 120 students per class,” he said.
“I appreciate the efforts made by Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma as he is conducting surprise checks at different schools in the state. But before he reaches any spot, the information about his arrival is already there. Inspection should be done of the schools which are operating from the bylanes and outer limits of the cities,” added Mishra.
