Mumbai: The original Tulsi is back in India's longest running soap opera Kunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi but Smriti Irani's return has sparked off many questions, is this comeback only to please the masses and get the ratings.
Producer Balaji Telefilms Ekta Kapur says, "I have not got Smirti to get TRP's, our personal relationship also mattered to us."
It's not just the TRPs of Kyunki that fostered the return of Smriti Irani on the show, but also the fact that Smriti's own foray into television production with her production house Ugraya hasn't been successful.
Her shows Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan, could not catch the attention of the viewers and her last serial Viruddh, though critically appreciated, was taken off air when it failed to up the ratings.
Head of Fiction Programming Sony TV, Sanjay Upadhyay says, "The toughest part is to make something that should connect with the masses. There are times, when we don't really make any impact with the viewers."
Smriti's on screen appearances didn't quite find acceptance the way her Tulsi-act did with the masses.
Actor Sushant Singh says, "She was trying to do something different after potraying Tulsi on screen but the channel likes to adopt the same old formula that works for other soaps."
So in the end it could have very well bee a chance to save face and use the image of Tulsi to garner some visibility and maintain her own brand value. However Smriti Irani, the producer has not yet given up on television production just as yet as she's all set to produce a family drama series for Zee Television soon.
