Malda: Malda District Magistrate Godala Kiran Kumar, who was arrested last week on corruption charges has been granted conditional bail. Earlier, IPS officer and former Siliguri police commissioner K Jayaraman who arrested the DM was transferred out of Malda. Kumar was arrested for allegedly embezzling government money sanctioned for civil projects to the tune of Rs 100 crore.
Despite a police complaint being filed against the accused IAS officer, the embarrassed state government called the arrest unwarranted and blamed the IPS officer of exceeding his brief in booking the accused.
"He was arrested without our consent. We had no prior information about this. The Siliguri police commissioner exceeded his brief and acted outside his jurisdiction. We have asked him to step down and have summoned him to meet the DGP in Kolkata," said West Bengal Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra said.
Meanwhile, a local court had asked the police to hold interrogations of the accused in the presence of his lawyers.
"Responding to our plea, the court has directed the police to hold all interrogations of the accused in the presence of his lawyers," said Aytree Sharma, counsel for G Kiran Kumar.
The alleged corruption was recorded during his tenure as the CEO of Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority between September 2011 and March, 2013. Some 10 private civil contractors and middlemen have also been arrested in this case.
