KANNUR: Berlin Kunhanandan Nair, the expelled CPM veteran and renowned journalist, invited Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan for a luncheon meeting with him on Friday. But sensing danger and prodded by the district committee, the CPM leadership erected a virtual 'Berlin Wall' and banned him from having lunch with Berlin although it permitted VS to visit his house at Narath, almost 15 km away from the Kannur district committee office of the CPM.
Berlin Kunhanandan Nair, who served as a journalist based in Berlin for nearly three decades, had invited Achuthanandan for lunch when he came to know that VS was coming to Kannur on Friday. Achuthanandan called on the ailing comrade after taking a short break from his busy programmes. Obeying the party directive, he refused to share lunch with Nair.

However, he accepted the tender coconut water given to him saying there was no ban on drinking water from Berlin's house. He said he will come later to share food with him.

It was for the first time after Berlin's expulsion that VS was visiting his house.
