People of Andaman and Nicobar Islands have contributed over Rs 2 crore to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for Uttarakhand relief and
rehabilitation. Officials said the Union Territory's Lt Governor Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh handed over an amount of Rs 2.19 crore for the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. The amount consists of one day's salary of all government employees of the Islands as well as contributions of Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industries, state Cooperative Bank and other voluntary organisations and individuals.
The contribution is reciprocation for the help rendered by the people of the country to the Islands in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, the officials said. Flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand had resulted in unprecedented damage and devastation resulting in death of hundreds of people.
