Kolkata: At least two people were killed when a century-old building collapsed in Kolkata’s Bowbazar area on Tuesday afternoon. Several people are also feared to be trapped under the debris.
Fire department officials involved in the rescue operations said that incessant rainfall in the city in the past few days had caused a portion of the two-storey structure to collapse.
“A part of an old building at 10-B Indian Mirror Street collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. Some inhabitants of the house are feared trapped under the debris,” a fire brigade official said.
Police and a disaster management team have also rushed to the spot for rescue operations. According to fire officials, the part of the building that collapsed was inhabited by a number of people.
"The rescue operation is on. However, how many people are trapped in the wreckage is still not certain," an officer from Taltala Police Station said.
City mayor Sovan Chatterjee also reached the spot to inspect the situation. He said that the building was being used as a warehouse.
Chatterjee told the media that according to a survey conducted recently, around 1,200 buildings in the city were found to be in a dilapidated condition. Chatterjee said that the debris are being cleared and the case is being discussed with the police authorities.
