New Delhi: Series of earthquake at Andaman & Nicobar Islands with a magnitude of around 4-6 in the Richter scale in last 24 hours has created panic among the local people in the archipelago.
On Tuesday early morning a mild tremor was felt and the local administration has requested the local people and fishermen not to venture in the sea. Tourists were asked to avoid water sports at Corvine Cove beach till the next advisory from the meteorological department was released.
Officials at the Andaman's Disaster Management Cell (ADMC) claimed that there is nothing to panic as it was mild tremors. ADMC said that they are keeping a close watch on the situation and keeping an eye on the water levels.
It was learnt that one of the tremors was recorded in North Sumatra region in Indonesia while others have been felt in and around the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar, A.K. Singh, tweeted, "Number of tremors off Nicobar islands at varying depths, One reached 6.4, all emergency Centers activated,felt at Campbell bay, all well".
According to the National Seismological Division, a body under the Ministry of Earth Science that tracks seismic activities, three jolts were recorded on Monday measuring 4.9, 5.1 and 4.9 respectively on the Richter scale.
Both Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Indonesian archipelago fall under high seismic zone and often records tremors. In 2004, Andaman was hit by a Tsunami, which caused massive devastation in the archipelago.
