Despite the opening of a renovated bridge in Tripunithura on Friday, traffic snarls in the town are set to continue unabated, thanks to the delay on the part of the Public Works Department (PWD) in widening another crucial stretch.
The re-opening of the Andhakarathodu Bridge, after a five-month closure for renovation, will make life easier for motorists along the Tripunithura-Poothotta route. But, at the same time, land acquisition for widening the East Fort Junction, one of the busiest junctions along the Ernakulam-Ettumanoor route, is yet to be initiated.
According to PWD officials, the proposal to widen the junction had been made many years ago. “We have not started any land acquisition procedures for the widening of the East Fort Junction,” said Shylamol, PWD Executive Engineer, Tripunithura. “The junction is narrow and the traffic is already heavy in the area. Moreover, the junction lacks basic facilities. We will bring this to the notice of the Tripunithura Municipality. In the present scenario, instead if being a help, the re-opening of the Andhakarathodu Bridge will increase the traffic woes of the people,” she said.
Another official pointed out that the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had commissioned a transformer near the junction four months ago, creating further hassles.
“The transformer will be another hurdle which will delay the widening of the junction. KSEB officials have commissioned the transformer without considering the alignment for widening,” the official said. Meanwhile, KSEB Tripunithura Executive Engineer N G Santhosh said they will replace the transformer if the PWD informs them about the requirement of space at the junction. “We haven’t received any official communication from the PWD. The transformer can be replaced at the time of widening,” he said.
