Thiruvananthapuram: Following 16/6, when the City Corporation had turned into a battleground, the office had flaunted vacant seats for days on end. The Left employees kept away from office toppling the very functioning of the local body. But on Sunday, they made up for the lost work by turning up in their seats and remaining there till 5 pm. As many as 500 employees who have affiliation with the pro-Left Kerala Municipal and Corporation Staff Union (KMCSU) signed their attendance register on Sunday even while the pro-Congress employees dubbed it as a publicity stunt.
On June 16, the Congress councillors had laid a siege to the office by shutting down the entrances to the local body over the waste management issue. The Left employees protested against the move and the resistance ended in a scuffle, leading to police intervention. The incident saw the government suspending six employees and the police registering FIR against hundreds who could be identified on sight. Warrants were issued against 19 other employees.
"The police had unleashed a terror plan upon the employees by roaming around the office in mufti, by knocking at the doors of many employees’ houses at midnight and by making frightening calls to many. The employees kept away from office for many days but in the last three days situation has been better. We are working today to indicate that the incident, though untoward, has been placed on the back burner by us in the larger interest of the public,’’ said K Jayadevan, KMCSU general secretary. He said that 523 workers belonging to the Union turned up at the office, while the pro-Congress employees kept away.
The Janasevana Kendram witnessed a regular flow of visitors who had come to file applications for certificates or to get them. The Birth, Death and Marriage registration section, which has in the past too set an example by working on Sundays, repeated the feat this time too.
Meanwhile, a Congress leader said that the Union, which had been shouting for a public-friendly Corporation, had showed its true colours in the past few days. ‘’This working on Sunday by not working throughout the week is an eye-wash to deceive the general public,’’ he said.
