The Museum of History and Heritage is one of the must-visit places in Kerala for History enthusiasts. According to Local 18 Kerala, this museum is located on Vellayambalam Road opposite Napier Museum and adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation Building. Located in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, the Museum of History and Heritage is a joint venture of the Kerala Tourism Department and the Kerala State Department of Archaeology. Eight galleries inside the museum represent a specific period of the region’s history.
These include prehistoric times, the Iron Age, and early and medieval history. The galleries also include stone, wood, and bronze sculptures, art and architecture, traditional art forms, musical instruments, mural paintings and heritage.
Not only these artefacts, but the documentaries on Kerala’s cultural history are also available here. Besides these, archaeological evidence of the Neolithic Age, Iron Age burials, and bronze, wooden and stone deities are also available here. The Museum of History and Heritage was established in 2011 with the collaboration of the Departments of Archaeology and Tourism in a building called Park View.
Park View was the residence of the Chief Secretary during the Travancore dynasty. Museum of History and Heritage, South India’s first interactive museum traces the stages of Kerala’s evolution, beginning with the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. It finally leads to the traditional history of the state.
The replicas found here deserve special mention as they include one of the Nalukettu houses in Kollam which used to be the traditional house in Kerala. It also includes a Nalukettu kitchen with all its associated artefacts. Museum of History and Heritage also includes an excavation trench from a megalithic site. Kerala art forms such as mural paintings and Kalamezhuthu are also preserved in the museum. Kalamezhuthu, a ritualistic art, is a common feature of temples as well as noble households.
Another museum known as the Museum of the Word, is a hidden treasure filled with knowledge. It is located in the quaint village of Vembayam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This place has been grabbing a lot of attention due to the colossal Bible exhibit which is expected to be the largest one in Asia.
