Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said terrorism is no longer a peripheral problem of the region but its long shadow stretches across the world.
"In this forum, we often thought of terrorism as a peripheral problem for this region," said Modi, on the second day of his Malaysia visit at the 10th East Asia Summit that got underway at Kuala Lumpur.
"The barbaric terror strikes in Paris, Ankara, Beirut, Mali and on the Russian aircraft (brought down in Egypt's Sinai last month) is a stark reminder that its shadow stretches across our societies and our world, both in recruitment and choice of targets," he said.
"We must build new global resolve and new strategies for combating terrorism, without balancing it against political considerations. No country should use or support terrorism," Modi said.
The remarks came in the backdrop of deadly attacks in Paris on November 13 in which 130 people were killed and hundred others were injured. On Friday, two terrorists killed 27 people in a hotel in Mali.
The summit saw world leaders including US President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe issuing a joint statement on regional and economic partnership.
Modi has also put forth his vision for East Asia Summit and proposed support for regional architecture for security cooperation, stronger co-operation in cyber security, outer space and non-proliferation, working towards early conclusion of regional comprehensive economic partnership and development cooperation at heart of the East Asia Summit.
