CHENNAI: The septuagenarian manager of a temple at Madipakkam was arrested on Sunday for allegedly harassing a 12-year-old girl.Police identified the arrested person as Krishnamurthy (70) from Kerala.According to police sources, Maheshwari, a maid, used to clean articles used for puja at the temple and cook for the manager. On Saturday, she sent her 12-year-old daughter to the temple. She subsequently returned home and later, fell ill. When Maheshwari told her daughter that she would take her to a doctor, the girl started crying and said that Krishnamurthy harassed her while she was at the temple. Based on a complaint from Maheshwari, Krishnamurthy was arrested.Later in the evening, locals protested in front of the temple, demanding that temple secretary Radhakrishnan be sacked for trying to save Krishnamurthy in the case. The protesters dispersed after the temple authorities assured that action would taken in this regard.Girl Dies in MishapA 12-year-old girl was fatally knocked down by a car on Anna Salai in Teynampet on Sunday. The driver was subsequently arrested.Pondy Bazaar Traffic police sources told Express that Jhansi alias R Janaki, a resident of Dr Giriappa Road, was crossing the road near a five-star hotel at Teynampet, when a car (TN22 CV 1143) that was negotiating a U-turn at the signal, knocked her down. Jhansi, a Class VI student of a private school at Nungambakkam, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the government hospital in Royapettah, where she was declared ‘brought dead.’ The victim’s mother Alamelu (47) works as a domestic help, police said.The driver of the car, Bhavan Raj, a software engineer at SIDCO, Siruseri and resident of Thiruvanmiyur, was arrested and booked under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving).
