Telangana's Cyber Security Bureau Recovers Over Rs 85 Crore Of Defrauded Money In Five Months
Refund orders were granted in 6,449 cases amounting to Rs 85.05 crore. Out of this amount, Rs 36.8 crore was refunded in Cyberabad Commissionerate.

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has created a new record by refunding Rs 85.05 crore to the victims of cyber fraud from March to July 2024. It has been provided in all the commissioners and districts of Telangana state. Police announced that this victory was possible as a result of joint efforts between TGCSB and the Telangana Legal Services Authority (TGLSA). These efforts are due to the increasing cyber crime cases which led to the surge of FIRs by the station house officers.

One major concern was that the fraudulent funds remained in banks for long periods and were not repaid to victims. To address this issue, in February 2024, TGCSB in collaboration with TGLSA drafted a standard operating procedure (SOP) to streamline the procedure for filing petitions under Section 457 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. It was sent to all District Judicial Service Authorities in Telangana.

Since the guidelines were issued to all District Judges by February 20, a total of 6,840 petitions have been filed in courts. Refund orders were granted in 6,449 cases amounting to Rs 85.05 crore. Out of this amount, Rs.36.8 crore was refunded in Cyberabad Commissionerate. It was the unit that processed the highest number of refunds.

The program provided immediate financial relief to victims of cyber fraud. It has set a new standard for cyber security and legal proceedings in Telangana. These efforts demonstrate TGCSB’s continued dedication to protecting the citizens of Telangana from cyber threats and providing justice and financial compensation to victims.

The Cyber Security Bureau emphasises the importance of reporting cyber fraud in the “golden hour” as soon as cyber fraud is detected or suspected. Immediate reporting gives more chances to freeze the money deposited in the accused’s bank accounts and digital wallets. Victims are asked to report the incidents immediately by calling 1930 or visiting the https://cybercrime.gov.in/ portal, the cyber police said.
