Telangana Beedi Worker’s Son Gets AIR 27 In UPSC
Sai Kiran finished his graduation from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal. He secured a job in the software sector.

In the Velichala village in the Karimnagar district of Telangana, India, a young man named Nandala Sai Kiran has set an example that poverty is not a barrier if one wants to receive an education. Recently, he secured 27th rank in the 2023 Civil Services Exam (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). His story inspires and sets him apart from his peers because he is the son of a beedi maker and has faced immense struggles and hardships in life. However, he never let those challenges dictate his life and steered himself to success.

Nandala Sai Kiran’s father lost the battle to cancer in 2016. Ever since his mother Lakshmi shouldered the responsibility of the family and educating her children. She is the sole bread-earner of the family and her source of income is to weave beedis. Despite the struggles, she educated her children and after seeing their mother working so hard for them, the children excelled in their studies. Nandala Sai Kiran’s sister, Sravanti studied at the Basara IIIT campus in Hyderabad and is currently working as an Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) in Mission Bhagiratha.

In an exclusive interview with Local 18, Sai Kiran revealed that he completed his schooling at Saraswati School in Velichala village. He further continued his higher education at Teja High School, Karimnagar and completed his class 12 from Trinity College, Karimnagar. He finished his college at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal. Sai Kiran secured a job in the software sector and began preparing for the civil services exam. He took online coaching lessons to focus on cracking the UPSC while he continued with his job.

Sai failed to crack the UPSC CSE on his first attempt. Instead of getting disheartened, he once again focused on his studies and this time, in the second attempt, he cracked the exam.

In the interview, Sai Kiran revealed that during his first attempt, he was preparing for his exams while doing his job. After failing to crack the test, he decided to quit his job and shift his focus to studying. But, his relatives advised him to not give up the job. So, he decided to seek a bit of help and joined a coaching class. After studying hard, securing a 27th All India Rank (AIR) is no easy feat.

Sai Kiran now serves as an example for the younger generation and other aspirants. He said, “I am at this level, because of my mother’s efforts and hard work. I will never forget that.” His accomplishment has made his whole family, relatives and community members beaming with pride.
