Mumbai: Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday filed her nomination for the September 18 Rajya Sabha bypolls at the State Assembly in Mumbai.
The elections were necessitated following the death of NCP MP Vasant Chavan on July 11. 38-year old Supriya was accomapanied by her husband Sadanand Sule, cousin and Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Ajit Pawar, Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra R R Patil, Public Works Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Energy Minister Dilip Valse Patil and Excise Minister Ganesh Naik.
Among leaders of Congress - NCP's alliance partner in DF government-- MPCC Chief Prabha Rau and Revenue Minister Narayan Rane were present at Vidhan Bhavan.
Talking to reporters after filing her papers, Supriya said she got the chance to file the nomination "as a result of a lot of hard work" on her part.
"I have not got anything readymade and have worked hard for it," she said.
"My priorities would be to work in areas of women empowerement, health and child education."
Asked if she had discussed the Rajya Sabha nomination issue with her father, she replied in the negative.
MPCC president Prabha Rau, who had accompanied her to Vidhan Bhavan, said Congress would support Supriya's candidature.
"This decision has been taken by the party high command," Rau said when asked about NCP having supported industrialist Rahul Bajaj against official Congress nominee Avinash Pandey in the recently held Rajya Sabha poll.
