KOCHI: In connection with Christmas and New Year celebrations, steps have been intensified to put a tab on production and distribution of illicit liquor especially in the forest areas, Excise Deputy Commissioner K Mohanan said.The decision was taken at the district level people’s council convened on Friday.An inspection will be conducted even in those institutions which have the licence to sell liquor. Action will be taken within half an hour if any case of violation of rules is reported.Mohanan said that frequent raids were carried out during November. Around 826 raids were conducted and 6,839 vehicles inspected during the period. The Excise commissioner said that 99 abkari cases, six drugs cases and five sample cases were registered.“Based on this, 103 accused were arrested. 232 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor, 203 litres of arishtas, 475 kilo ganja, 23 litres of beer and 660 litres of foreign liquor were confiscated.”Land Acquisition Deputy Collector Mohandas Pillai presided over the meeting. Officials of the Excise Department, Motor Vehicles Department and the police participated.
