BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to install organic waste converter plants at all the 198 wards in Bangalore.Every day more than 5,000 tonnes of garbage is collected in the city. Out of which, at least 40 per cent is organic waste. Organic waste includes rotten vegetables and fruits that are leftover from markets, dry leaves, kitchen waste like vegetable peels, fruit peels, flowers, coffee and other wastes. At present, BBMP has two organic waste converter plants, one at Malleswaram and the other was recently inaugurated at Jayanagar. Each plant has a capacity to take one tonne of organic waste. According to a senior BBMP official, in the ward parks organic waste will be converted in to manure. Further, the official said that setting up of each plant costs `20 lakh. The official further added that each plant had the capacity to take close to two tonnes of organic waste.”The manure can be either used for the parks or even public can procure it for a nominal cost or both, depending on the amount of manure produced. “BBMP has more than 1,000 parks in Bangalore. It can be recalled that BBMP has already introduced similar process in other parks. Through the dried leaves collected from parks, BBMP is already producing manure using organic waste converters. This has saved at least 50 per cent of the cost of manure incurred by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike,” the official added.
