Sikhs raise voice against Vande Mataram
In a statement issued in Amritsar, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said since the Song only one religion.

New Delhi: Adding fuel to the already raging debate on the National Song, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Jathedar Avtar Singh has appealed to institutions run by the Sikh community not to sing "Vande Mataram" on September 7.

In a statement issued in Amritsar, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said since the Song only propagates a particular religion and does not fulfil aspirations of minorities, it should not be sung.

Makkar went as far as saying that making compulsary the singing of the sing was "a conspiracy to spread communalism the country."

He instead appealed to the community to sing the hymn, authored by Guru Gobind Singh, "De Shiva bar mohe eh, subh karman te kabhon na taron" (Oh Lord, grant me this boon, that I may not hesitate from performing action).

He said India was a multi-religious and multi-lingual nation and imposing a song that reflected just one religion was bound to hurt the sentiments of religious minorities.
