CHENNAI: Shriram Ilakkia Kazhagam, the literary wing of India’s leading non-banking financial companies, Shriram Group, is conducting the Thirukkural Elocution Contest 2011 in the months of July and August for school and college students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.“My participation in about 104 oratorical competitions at school and college levels during my education has molded me to become a journalist and subsequently succeed in IAS exams,” said Shri R Balakrishnan IAS, Chief Vigilance Officer of Chennai Petroleum Corporation at the Chennai-zone Thirukkural Elocution Contest on July 16 at Dr MGR Janaki Arts and Science College for Women. In the Chennai-zone contest, 170 students participated in Junior level of 6, 7 and 8 standards, 122 in senior level of 9 and 10, 46 in super senior level of 11 and 12 and 18 in college level amounting to 356 students in all. Dr KA Gunasekaran, director of the World Tamil Research Foundation, delivered a special address and gave away shields and books to the winners of the competition. Shri NT Ramesh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Armed Force), inaugurated the Vellore competition and Shri K Ponnurangam, assistant Conservator of Forests, Vellore, gave away shields and books to the winners of the competition in the valedictory function.
