New Delhi: Serena Williams of US, seeded eight, advanced to the third round of the French Open by beating Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-0, 7-6 (3) in the second round in Paris on Thursday.
The American was made to work hard in the second set that stretched into a tie-breaker. She was, inf act, trailing 0-3 before rallying back to book her place in the third round on her first match point.
Serena will now face Michella Krajiceck in the next round. Going by her performance so far, the eight-time Grand Slam champion is on track to meet No. 1 seed Justine Henin in the quarter-finals.
Fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo, too, advanced to the third round but not before she was stretched the full distance in her match against Nathalie Dechy.
However, a two-hour rain delay allowed Mauresmo to regroup and to earn a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1 win.
No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova, too, had a tough time against Meghann Shaughnessy before she won 7-6 (4), 6-3 after trailing 0-5 in the first set.
Other winners in the women's section were No. 7 Ana Ivanovic and No. 9 Anna Chakvetadze, and men's No. 6 Novak Djokovic, No. 7 Ivan Ljubicic and 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis.
