THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) will organise a one-day seminar highlighting the role of ‘Women in Chemistry’ on Wednesday as part of its celebrations marking the International Year of Chemistry, 2011. The year also coincides with the centenary of the Nobel prize conferred on Madam Curie.The NIIST will organise a special programme for providing an opportunity to young college students, especially girls,to listen to a bunch of leading women chemists in the country. The symposium will be inaugurated by Prof H Ila, senior scientist at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR). NIIST director Dr Suresh Das, Prof Charusita Chakravarty from IIT New Delhi, Dr M Lakshmi Kantam from IICT Hyderabad and Dr Aruna Dhathathreyan from CLRI Chennai would address the gathering.The International Year is being celebrated to increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world requirements and also to create interest and enthusiasm among the new generation towards chemistry.
