New Delhi: Cutting across the party line, MPs are demanding an increase in funds allocated to them for development work in their constituencies from Rs 5 crore to Rs 25 crore. The MPs said the increase in the fund is necessary since Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked them to spend at least half their funds on the Clean India programme.
Reiterating PM Modi's agenda, President Pranab Mukerjee while addressing the joint session of Parliament on the first day of Budget session said, "I will appeal to all MPs to spend 50 per cent of MPLAD fund on Swachh Bharat mission,"
Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai is likely to meet the Prime Minister on Thursday seeking an increase in the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds.
The previous UPA government had rejected an earlier demand to increase MPLADs funds to Rs 10 crore.
