New Delhi: Underworld don Abu Salem, who was brought to the Capital by a team of Anti-Terrorist Squad from Mumbai on Monday, was produced in a city court on Tuesday in connection with an extortion case.

Salem was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini at the Tis Hazari courts following a production warrant against him in connection with an alleged extortion call he made to a south Delhi-based businessman.

The gangster, who had been lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail after his extradition from Portugal in 2005, had allegedly demanded Rs one crore from Rajat Nagrath, owner of Allied Communications in East of Kailash six years ago.

Salem has been remanded to seven-day police custody on the grounds that he needs to be interrogated in two cases of extortion and one on attempt to murder.

Though, there are four cases registered against him in Delhi, he can be tried in only three cases, which were mentioned in the extradition agreement with Portugal.

Salem is facing trial in eight cases in the country.

The court had earlier issued production warrants at three occasions against Salem but a Mumbai court had stayed his production on his lawyer's plea on security grounds.
