TIRUVANANMALAI:/VELLORE: Funds of `2 crore have been allotted by the Police Department to reform and rahabilitate bootleggers in Tiruvannamalai. According to Tiruvannamalai SP Samundeswari, the fund will be distributed on February 10.Talking to media persons, she said that steps have been intensified to make Tiruvannamalai an illicit-liquor free district. She said that about 800 reformed bootleggers in the district will benefit, and added that a loan with a subsidy of up to `30,000 will be given to each of them to start businesses like eateries and petty shops. Materials needed for the business will be distributed by the police. Persons who benefit from the assistance will be monitored by cops and if they were found associated with bootlegging in the future, they will face severe action, the SP said.Victim Compensation fund given to 8 familiesThe superintendent of the special prison for women here, T Rajalakshmi, on Thursday handed over `1,80,000 of the Victim Compensation Fund to family members of eight victims from Pollachi, Sulur, Dharmapuri and Tiruppur who lost close relatives due to the actions of four female life convicts confined in Vellore prison. The compensation included 30 per cent of the salary earned by the convicts in the prison through labour while the government provides 70 per cent. Based on the recommendation of the District Level Committee under the chairmanship of the district collector, the compensation fund was sanctioned by the Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons S K Dogra recently. The funds were disbursed to the victimised families by cheque at the office of the prison superintendent in the presence of Regional Probation Officer.
