Unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 17.33 lakh was seized by the city police, who arrested three persons in this connection on Friday.
Police said the trio was spotted in front of a temple in Tiruvanmiyur on Thursday midnight. On suspicion, police picked them up and during interrogation, the three were said to have given contradictory replies.
Following this, police searched their belongings and found Rs 17.33 lakh cash stashed in a bag. The trio also had 11 mobile phones and a two-wheeler in their possession. As they could not produce supportive documents for the cash in their possession, the trio, identified as Mohammed Hussain (31), Ziauddeen (33) and Siddique (22), were arrested.
Tiruvanmiyur Inspector K Jayaraj told Express that Hussain and Ziauddeen were working as agents in a private shipping company, while Siddique was pursuing MCA in a college near Thousand Lights. A case under sections 41 (read with 102 of the CrPc) was filed and the trio was produced before a court in Saidapet, which remanded them in judicial custody.
Sources said that Hussain had told the investigating officers that he was approached by one of his friends to deliver the package to a person in Nagore. Hussain had been utilising Ziauddeen to deliver such packages.
“This was one such assignment, but we were intercepted before our transaction was over,” he had apparently told police.
The police have also mounted vigil to bust the entire racket as the arrested are believed to be couriers.
