CHENNAI: Security has been beefed up in major railway stations across the city, against the backdrop of the forthcoming Republic Day.According to S R Gandhi, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Chennai Division, Southern Railway, additional security personnel have been posted in railway stations, as part of the security arrangements."All the baggage of passengers entering the Central and Egmore railway stations will be screened. Also, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police will carry out joint-combing operations," he said. Besides, the bomb and dog squads are also pressed into duty, as part of enhanced security measures, he added. The railway employees at the parcel offices have been sensitised to be alert and look for suspicious articles, while handling the parcels.Meanwhile, RPF men at Mambalam Railway Station were seen distributing pamphlets to commuters that urged them to exercise caution on abandoned and unclaimed articles found on the railway premises. Around 1,000 such pamphlets are to be distributed before the D-Day.
