KOCHI: The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has planned a project    to provide more facilities for pilgrims and tourists visiting the Chottanikkara temple. The tender for the proposed pilgrim centre, worth `72.5 lakh, has been handed over to Murthy Construction and it will be completed within six months. The 1500-square-feet pilgrim centre will have three floors and aims at  providing restrooms and sanitation facilities to the pilgrims.“During Sabrimala season, many pilgrims, including those from North India and foreign countries, visit the temple and spend their nights here. The project will be a milestone in the development of the temple. The centre is expected to attract more pilgrims,” T N Jayashankar, DTPC secretary said. The building will have shops and dormitories with toilet facilities for the pilgrims. “We are planning to start shops that sell souvenirs and religious books. The first and second floors will have dormitories with washroom facilities. Each floor will be big enough to accomodate a large number of pilgrims at the same time,” Jayashankar said. The construction of the building will be overlooked by Nirmithi, a government organisation. There have been complaints from pilgrims that the temple lacks proper infrastructure and allied facilities to accommodate pilgrims.
