Paris: An exhibition on artefacts, statues and photos of the ancient Indian empires, particularly 4th century's Gupta period has been launched in Paris.
The three-month-long exhibition was opened at the Grand Palais on Tuesday.
A total of 110 sculptures in stone, terracotta and bronze have been displayed at the biggest exhibition devoted to the Gupta period, also known as the Golden Age in Indian history.
"This is the biggest exhibition based on India history in recent times in Paris," said the curator of Indian arts at the Guimet Musuem, Paris, Amina Okada.
The exhibition presents Gupta Boddhistavas and other related statues from Mathura and Sarnath to mark the start of the dynasty, hence showing the strong influence from the Kushana period art style.
In the interior galleries, there are aesthetics from Deogarh, Kuthara and other important sites of the 5th and 6th centuries AD.
Most of the statues are a collection of Buddhist, Jain and Hindu sculptures.
Books on Indian literature, music and visual arts are also available at the exhibition.
The exhibition has been organised by the Network of National Musuems in France (Riunion des musies nationaux), the Guimet museum of Asian history and art, Paris and the National Museum in New Delhi.
The exhibition will also witness lectures on the Gupta period, Kalidas, Kathak recitals, screenings of films and a series of cultural events.
