New Delhi: Over 1,800 people were awarded jail terms for drunken driving in the capital in the past three months, police said on Friday.

"1,863 have been awarded jail terms in the past 91 days, 326 lost driving licences, 4,072 have been fined while 2,163 cases are under trial," Satyender Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.

Despite exhortations to open up many fronts together, he said, they have stuck for nearly two years in their sustained action against drunken and it is having effect as well.

"There is better discipline on roads, accidents are coming down consistently and people are realizing that they cannot get away with this offence. We have upgraded checks and though catches could be low for a day but overall there have been 6,313 prosecutions against 5017 in 2011," He said.

"1,863 jail terms in 91 days makes it more than 20 persons being awarded jail term daily. Message is going down well," he added.

Fatal accidents were down for third year in a row. "As against 520 accidents in first three months of 2011 this year there have been 409. Deaths are also down from 535 to 421. We have to sustain this drive to make city sober and disciplined," Garg said.
