THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At one place he was denied overnight shelter by a police officer because the latter thought he might be a terrorist! Elsewhere, while traversing a forest, he had to deal with a group of monkeys. On yet another occasion, he was intercepted by two goons and thoroughly searched before they let him off when they found he had no money. In spite of all that, he would say without a second thought, “Our country is great. And no terrorist can disintegrate this nation.” Daljeet Singh, the 48-year-old electronics engineer from West Delhi, is on a ‘Delhi to Kanyakumari’ tour on his bicycle. It was in June that he started the trip, with a mission in his mind - to take the message that God is one and He is eternal, besides spreading awareness about global warming. “I believe in Osho and I feel extremely energetic once I meditate. It is that energy which fuelled my thought to embark on a bicycle tour. Our understanding of God begins and ends with the poojas or rituals we do; we rarely think beyond that, ie about the supreme power of God. That is one message I want to take to the people. Regarding global warming, it is high time we all did something to protect Mother Nature. Not many people understand what global warming is, we have to take the message to them,” Daljeet explains. Daljeet, who runs an electronics service shop back home, affirms that India is unique in many ways. “It is true that I have had some bad experiences. Like, when I went to this police station on Goa border asking whether I could spend the night there since I didn’t have enough money to spend on a lodging facility, the police officer asked, ‘What if you are a terrorist’? Even after repeated pleas, he didn’t listen and I had look for another arrangement. In spite of all that, I still feel that most people are warm and friendly and it is this quality that keeps us together,” he says with confidence. It has been a rejuvenating and learning experience for Daljeet, who usually spends the nights at temples or other places of worship in order to save money. He has now covered the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. The cycle on which he initially started the trip was sold at Bhopal, from where he purchased a Hero cycle which he is using now. “It has been very lucky for me. I am very healthy and the best thing is, I could reduce my tummy.” Interestingly, now Daljeet is planning to extend the trip instead of stopping at Kanyakumari. But, for that he needs money.
