Many people are more connected with nature and run several programs related to this. In the same situation, a nursery owner has developed a habit of teaching transplanting to students for free. Ruwari Venkataramana Joshi, who is the owner of Mallikarjuna Nursery in Kanchaguli in Siddapur taluk, has taught transplants to about fifty children, including children from the surrounding village.
Due to this, more than twenty children of classes between 5 and 7 who go to Kanchaguli school have now become experts in grafting. In the nursery, which is famous for pepper, fruit and apple, he is growing and selling quality saplings in two greenhouses (polyhouses) with an area of 5 acres. Presently, several plants are available in the nursery, which include Nutmeg, Coconut, Pepper, Cardamom, Clove, Buckwheat, Mango, Macadamia, Custard apple, Mangosteen, Ramphal, Arcade, Coffee and Sandalwood, among others.
Agricultural scientists from Kerala also visited his nursery and inspected the growing seedlings and were awarded the Star Certificate of Quality Assurance. The saplings here are in great demand not only in the state of Karnataka but also in other states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.
He started Mallikarjuna Nursery with an inherited one-acre nut plantation and a three-quarter-acre coconut plantation and has been earning good income by producing and selling more than 1 lakh saplings every year for four years. It’s been four years now and he has been teaching children since the beginning. Thus, in this nursery, he has been teaching agriculture every Saturday and Sunday as a hobby to the children of neighbouring schools including Karjagi, Kanchuguli, Balesara and Kansur.
He also taught the process of budding, transplanting, nursery care and spraying to the children. They are well aware and know everything about the plants. They are motivated and said that they will do gardening in future.
