Lucknow: Iqbal Ansari, son of Hashim Ansari the main litigant in the Babri Masjid dispute, says that he is not against Lord Ram but the Babri Masjid belongs to Muslims.

“Not one but thousands of Ram Temples should be built in Ayodhya as it a matter of faith for our Hindu brothers, but at the same time the Babri Masjid also belongs to Muslims. My father fought this case all his life and now I am taking ahead the fight on his behalf,” Ansari said.

On completion of 25 years of Babri Mosque demolition, Iqbal Ansari whose father Hashim Ansari was one of the oldest members of Babri Masjid Action Committee spoke exclusively to News18 and said, “Neither me nor my late father Hashin Ansari was against Ram Mandir or against Hindu religion. My father’s friendship with Mahant Gyan Ddas is not hidden from anyone and both were in harmony as always. But as a matter of fact there was a Mosque where Ramlala is ‘Virajman’ and we have proper proof to prove our claim.”

Speaking on out of court settlements and peace initiatives by non-parties, Ansari said, “It is not possible anymore. When my father and Mahant Gyan Das first attempted to solve the matter, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other outfits started politicizing it.”

He added, “Politics over the matter started even before the talks could start. Slogans were raised that Masjid will not be built in Ayodhya at any cost. Our fight is simple and based on the fact that it was a mosque and we have sufficient evidence to prove it, which we have already submitted with the court. Now whatever decision the court takes, we will abide by it.”

Iqbal Ansari also says that he does not want any riots in the name of Ram Mandir or Babri Masjid. He further said that a lot of politics has already played out on the issue.

“All we want is now a verdict by the court in this case,” says Ansari.

There are four parties from the Babri Mosque’s side.

The oldest party is Mahfuzurrahman, while the other three were brought in after the deaths of their fathers. Like after Hashim Ansari’s death Iqbal Ansari became the party, similarly, after the death of Zafar, his son Farooq Khan became a party and after Farooq’s death his son Umar Khan took his place. The Muslim Personal Law Board takes care of arranging for advocates and funds for all the parties in the case.
