New Delhi: Large parts of North India including the national capital region are reeling under severe power cuts due to failure of the Northern grid.
Train services have been severely disrupted in the North central zone. Only diesel operated trains are running right now.
Power cuts have been reported as early half past three on Friday morning but the situation seems to have worsened around 6 am, with commuters unable to catch their trains. The delay is mostly in the Ghaziabad-Allahabad route.
Some of the major trains delayed are Howrah-Kalka mail, Farakka express, Mahabodhi express and Shramshakti express.
Restoration service is on and authorities have said the power supply will resume soon.
"There has been very heavy fog last night in western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana leading to frequent tripping of transmission lines in these regions," Chairman and Managing Director of Power Grid Corp R P Singh said.
He has been working at the regional load dispatch Centre to restore normal power supply.
He, however, added that the transmission system in general was intact, though sporadic interruption in power supply might be felt in some areas.
This kind of problem arises when fog gets deposited in transmission lines.
PGCIL said it's priority was to make the entire transmission network functional followed by restoration of power supply in the affected areas.
Asked by when complete restoration was expected, Singh said by 1000 hrs the situation would be normal.
"We are all at work, including the Regional and State Load Dispatch Centres and assure you of our best endeavour in avoiding any crisis despite very hostile weather condition in the absence of winter rain", Singh said.
