HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is allegedly sitting quiet on over 340 dangerous dilapidated structures that can collapse any time. With incessant rains lashing the city, it seems the civic body will wake up from its slumber only after buildings cave in, putting lives of people living there in danger. The previous GHMC commissioner Sameer Sharma had issued directions about three months back to deputy municipal commissioners and assistant city planners to immediately demolish the dilapidated structures. But after he completed his term of office, the officials till date have not demolished any of the identified buildings nor vacated the owners or tenants.Officials admitted there has been a lapse on their part and cited they are busy with other routine works. The GHMC had carried out a survey of dilapidated buildings in 2006-07 and identified 737 buildings as dangerous, unfit or having weak structural stability. Out of them, over 125 owners undertook repairs and 244 were demolished in the last four years. However, the remaining could not be demolished due to disputes between owners and tenants or reluctance of owners to move out, with many cases also pending in various courts.
