PHULBANI: For five classes of Bradiguda Primary School under Khajuripada block in Kandhamal district, there are just eight students. This academic year, there are two students each in Class I, Class 2 and Class 5 and one each in Class 3 and Class 4. Similar situation prevailed in the last two academic sessions as well when there were 11 and 10 students respectively. As far as staff are concerned, there are just two persons in the school -  headmaster Debeswar Pradhan who also doubles up as a teacher and an assistant teacher Bhimasen Konhar. Not just staff, the school ails on infrastructure front too. Established in 1992, the school has just two classrooms named Bapuji and Netaji. Worse, one of the two classrooms is  dilapidated for lack of maintenance. “All the students are adjusted in one room and the classes taken accordingly. The office work is also been done from the same room,” said Pradhan. He added that in the absence of a boundary wall, anti-social elements often enter the school premises. Mid-day meals are cooked under a tree. The headmaster said that it is due to lack of awareness about the importance of education among the tribal families in the village and infrastructure facilities, the enrolment is thin. “We have tried to create awareness among the locals but there has been no improvement in the strength of the school,” he added. All this despite the fact that the school is just 20 km from the district headquarters. Repeated pleas to the district administration has only fallen on deaf ears. Last week, the Project Director of DRDA and the BDO of Khajuripada visited the school and promised to take up the matter at an appropriate level.
