Speaking to the media here the minister informed that the plan to introduce pension scheme for Overseas Indian workers was necessary, as the existing MGPSY scheme meant for Indian workers holding Emigration Check Required (ECR) passports and a valid work permit, which was launched earlier has not proved successful due to its sluggish enrollment process. Commenting that the government wants to step up the enrolment of Overseas Indian workers and popularise the pension scheme, the minister said that “it would fetch a good sum after their return to the country’.The new scheme also provides life insurance cover against any calamities he said.
