Inaugurating modernised 108 ambulance vehicles at Devara Yamzal in Ranga Reddy district on Friday, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said the state government would spend Rs 5,900 crore on health this year.
The government was replacing 220 old 108 vehicles with new, updated vehicles, he said at the programme held at the Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI).
The new vehicles would bring down the recurring expenditure on each ambulance to Rs 95,000 from Rs 1.18 lakh a month and the total expenditure to Rs 85 crore from Rs 101 crore.
The performance of EMRI improved in terms of attending the number of calls, distance covered and response time.
The staff were now attending more than 3,000 calls daily as against 2,800 calls earlier and each vehicle was covering around 4,500 km per month.
After receiving a distress call, the ambulance would now reach the spot within 15 minutes in urban areas and 24 minutes in rural areas, the chief minister said.
The EMRI has tied up with Stanford university to provide better services to people. Started with 32 vehicles in 2005, the 108 fleet had increased to 752 in the state. On the Rajiv Arogyasri, Kiran Reddy said 15 lakh operations had been performed under the scheme so far and Rs 5,000 crore had been spent this year alone.
Health education minister Kondru Murali Mohan said the government was according top priority to health and had decided to start new medical colleges in Nellore and Nizamabad districts.
