Mumbai: The film Munnabhai MBBS was not only remade in almost every South Indian language, it has also registered itself as perhaps the first Bollywood film to be remade in Hollywood. The film was a rare milestone is recent mainstream cinema - an intelligent and accessible comedy that had something for everybody.
The phenomenon called Munnabhai and Circuit that struck Bollywood more than a year back is here again to clean the society. And as the lovable duo - Munna and Circuit - are back for an encore in Lage Raho Munnabhai, critics are lauding the film's regular good-hearted hero. And on their part, fans are doing more than just rolling in the aisles at the antics of Munna and Circuit.
"Jaadu ki Jhappi se pehle mujhe nahi pata tha how important is hugging...ab main thode logon ko karta hoon (before Jadu ki Jhappi, I didn't know how important hugging is. Now, I do hug people), " says Yash Mehta, a young Munnabhai fan.
It's all due to what they call a chemical locha that Munnabhai meets Mahatma Gandhi and they get along like a house on fire. Munna and Circuit, arguably cinema's most adorable and roguish reformists since Laurel and Hardy, go about the business of generating humour out of the pathos of the human condition.
The innocence of Munna and Curcuit and their desire to make the world a better place has parents rejoicing.
"Koi bhi parents mana nahi karenge... Dono picturein message deti hain... Main to kehti hoon parents ko khud dikhani chahiyein, (I don't think any parent will prevent their wards from going to the film. Both the pictures have a message. I feel all parents should show the film to their wards)," says Bindu Mehta, Yash's mother.
It's the age of Gandhigiri and not dadagiri, so says Munna. And now, his followers say sahi hai bhidu (Yes, you are right). The filmmakers are so impressed with the response that the film has generated, they now intend to serialise the anctics of Munna and Circuit in future films. There is already talk of a comic strip on the duo. In a way, the two have emerged as the latest pop culture icons.
"It's moralistic and preachy, but in a nice way. It's an Akbar-Birbal series. There could be Munna-Circuit games, jokes, everything," says filmmaker Sudhir Mishra.
