The famous Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple in Mumbai is set for a big upgrade. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the process of beautification and up-gradation of area around the popular temple.
A drone survey of the temple’s surroundings will be done to identify the improvements needed. The idea is to provide world-class facilities to the devotees coming for worship. This would include setting up of grand gates at temple entrance, better parking, separate entry and exit points for devotees, crowd management system, facilities like drinking water and washrooms, seating arrangement and sheds for devotees in long queues.
Areas around the temple will also see changes like improved roads and footpaths, better mode of transport, removal of encroachment on footpath and roads mainly from temple entrance, provision of parking for vehicles of devotees and an assembly point.
Most Famous Temple
Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple is one of the most famous and prominent places in Mumbai. Devotees from all around the world visit the temple to worship Lord Ganesha. Many Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan have walked miles to the temple.
The BMC will prepare a full report of the area around the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple – like the Dadar railway station, Prabhadevi railway station, nearby Metro station and Chhathrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park. The details of roads, footpath, existing structures and traffic flow shall be measured from the above reports, along with details of utilities and encroachments present there.
The exercise will also involve a study of mode of transportation by which devotees are coming to temple and the travel time required. Roads approaching the temple will be studied and traffic movement on the adjacent roads to temple will also be studied.
There will also be an assessment of open municipal land available nearby which can be used for this project. Drone mapping of the temple’s surroundings will be done as well to capture accurate aerial data.
A consultant appointed by the BMC will suggest various works to be carried out to improve and beautify the area surrounding the temple. The idea is to provide better facilities and amenities to the devotees coming to temple.
What Could be the Outcome
A traffic survey will check the adequacy of nearby roads and footpaths to handle traffic, as well as suggest a plan to shift the encroachments as per requirements, if any. Long-term measures will also be taken to accommodate the large number of devotees coming to the temple. Queue management will be another key feature.
The consultant will also suggest ideas for mode of transportation from nearby railway station and Metro station to the temple. Special measures will be suggested for crowd coming to the temple on important occasions like New Year, Angarika Chaturthi, weekends and public holidays. The objective also is to avoid traffic jam on roads around the temple.
The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Temple is a sensitive place from security point of view, hence security measures to be taken will also be suggested by the consultant. The BMC has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) on January 26 to appoint a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
