Indore: A mufti who thought he was above the law has been brought down to earth with a crash.
A case has been registered against Khargone district Darul-uloom mufti Mohammad Rafiq Qasim who issued a fatwa in a divorce decree by a Sendhwa court.
The fatwa stated that since the judge was a 'non-muslim', the judgment given by him was not acceptable under the Islamic Shariat.
The Khargone police in Indore registered the case on Wednesday.
The Mufti had issued a fatwa when a Muslim woman, Arjumand Bano obtained a divorce from her husband and then married a schoolteacher.
Her husband had approached the mufti who issued a fatwa saying that the ruling could not be accepted because the judge was a non-Muslim.
The fatwa also claimed that Arjumand second marriage was illegal, since as per the Shariat she was still his wife.
Meanwhile the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has also protested against the fatwa and demanded stern action against the mufti.
