CHENNAI: The top police brass in Villupuram district has been directed by the Madras High Court to monitor the probe into the death of a 35-year-old man, allegedly in police custody.Justice A Arumugaswamy gave the direction on a petition by N Subramanian (74) of Sanjeevarayanpettai, Tindivanam.According to Subramanian, his son Umasankar went missing on December 9, 2006. He lodged a complaint with the police in January 2007 and also sent several representations to various police officials, including the Director-General of Police, the Villupuram DIG and the Superintendent of Police. His efforts went in vain.Later, he came to know through newspaper reports about the death of a man aged about 35, whose identity had not been mentioned. On seeing the photograph, he realised that it was his son.Subramanian said his inquiries with reliable sources revealed that prior to a week of spotting the dead body, a person had been kept in illegal custody, beaten up by the police and had fallen unconscious. Subsequently, his whereabouts were not known. He prayed the court to appoint an officer not below the rank of SP to probe the matter.Closing the petition, the judge issued the direction. The final report should be filed expeditiously, the judge added.
