COIMBATORE: Mothers-in-law were the root cause of a majority of cases that reach the Tamil Nadu State Women’s Commission, its chairperson Saraswathi Rangasamy revealed on Wednesday.“A majority of the cases the commission receives relate to harassment by the mothers-in-law. In many cases, during counselling, both the husband and wife agree to a compromise, but the problem between them continues because of the mothers-in-law from both sides. Nobody finds fault with the fathers-in-law,” she disclosed. She made this revelation after conducting a review meeting of the pending cases in Coimbatore district.Similar review meetings were conducted in 12 districts, she said. “We try to ensure that such disputes don’t end in divorce,” Saraswathi said.Since 2007, the commission has received 7,306 petitions, of which, 3,469 were settled and 3,836 pending. “We try to solve a petition within six months. In many cases, the petitioners approached the court for remedy. Since, such cases were pending in court, we could not take further action. That is the reason why many petitions were pending with the commission,” she clarified. In Coimbatore district, only 17 of the 58 cases received by the commission were pending, she added.Tiruvannamalai and Karur topped the list in terms of crimes against women. “Of the 13 districts where review meetings were conducted, crimes against women were on the higher side in districts like Tiruvannamalai and Karur,” she said.
