Kolkata: The Inspector of Sarenga Police Station in West Bengal's Bankura district has been killed in a gunfight with the Maoists.

The Inspector died of bullet injury on his chest following a gunbattle between police and a group of Maoists. The clash took place after the police engaged armed Maoists in an encounter.

The Maoists had attacked the house of a Tara Shankar Patra, a local Communist Party of India-Marxist member.

Patra escaped of bullet injuries on his leg.

The gunfight comes even as Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishanji had on Monday offered a 72-day ceasefire from February 25 to May 7.

Responding to the ceasefire offer Union Home Ministry had asked the Maoists to send a fax to 011-23093155 about the ceasefire offer.

However, the Ministry is yet to receive any response from the Maoists. The Maoists had in response asked the Home Minister to call them up on mobile number 09734695789.
