Mahajan's kidney functions worsen
Pramod Mahajan has been put on dialysis due to poor functioning of his kidneys and his condition continued to be critical.

Mumbai: Two back-to-back surgeries and many other medical interventions later, uncertainties continued over the condition of senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan three days after he was shot at by his younger brother on Saturday.

On a day when Mahajan's family flew in an Australian ortho-trauma specialist to Mumbai to support the medical services offered to the BJP leader, doctors attending on him said no further surgery has been planned on the 56-year-old Mahajan till his general condition improves.

Mahajan has already been operated upon twice, including once on Sunday evening after his vital parameters became unstable.

"His condition remains critical. The kidney function is poor and he has been put on dialysis," said Dr Anupam Verma, Director (administration) Hinduja Hospital, where Mahajan was admitted on Saturday.

Reading out from a medical bulletin, Verma said, "Efforts are on to stabilise his condition even as fluctuations continue to endanger his life."

The doctors have been checking on Mahajan every 5-10 minutes. "Unless there is a general improvement in his condition, we can't go for any intervention," the hospital authorities said on Monday evening, adding that Mahajan's condition has remained unchanged.

Earlier in the day, the senior BJP leader was put on dialysis as his kidneys weakened. He continues to be on life support system for the third day.

The doctors said the senior BJP leader was under sedation and has not regained consciousness.

Efforts were on by Dr G B Daver, team leader and surgeon, to stablise Mahajan's condition before contemplating further intervention, Dr Verma added.

The doctor said Mahajan is being monitored for his pancreatic and hepatic (liver) injuries and added that the bleeding from the liver has stopped.

Dr Verma also said the hospital has made adequate arrangement to prevent inconvenience to other patients and thanked the Mumbai police for their support and media for their cooperation.

Liver, pancreas not of major concern

Meanwhile, a noted gastroenterolgist, who was part of the team performing a surgical procedure on BJP general secretary, has said so far as the liver and pancreas are concerned, there was no cause for major concern.

Ravindranath, Director Global Hospital, Hyderabad, was invited by the family members of Mahajan to attend on him and he formed part of the team of Dr Mohammed Rela, a world-renowned UK-based liver specialist.

Ravindranath, who returned to Hyderabad and will again join the Mumbai team shortly, said Mahajan was injured by bullets inside the abdomen. Mainly the liver and other organs suffered extensive damage.

"Two bullets shot at Mahajan travelled through the liver, damaged the pancreas and went through the inferior vena cava. In such a situation, if not attended to immediately severe bleeding is caused leading to death."

Fortunately for Mahajan, he could be taken to the hospital quickly. Ravindranath said there is lot of damage to the liver and pancreas which needs further treatment, but is not of major concern.

However, the liver bleeding has stopped, which is a good sign. He said the packs used to stop bleeding liver has since been removed.

No transplant needed:

The noted liver surgeon also said there was "no need to transplant the liver" of Mahajan. He said the BJP leader could survive with the damaged liver.

"Mr Mahajan would survive with the damaged liver, which has the capacity to grow. There is no need for a liver transplant," he said.

He said the BJP leader's health condition was still critical, as he had received critical injuries to his liver, lower chest, abdomen and pancreas.

The hospital, which is known for conducting liver-transplants had a visitor in Dr Mohd Rela, the liver transplant expert from Kings College, London, who is currently at Mumbai at the behest of the Mahajan family.

Kidneys malfunctioning:

Although bleeding from his liver has stopped, Mahajan's kidneys have started malfunctioning since Sunday night.

Mahajan, who was shot at by his younger brother Pravin, was put on dialysis to improve the functioning of his kidneys, doctors said.

"His condition is just the same as it was in morning," Anupam Verma, Director (administration), Hinduja Hospital, said in the 7.30 pm bulletin.

Aussie intervention:

Meanwhile, Vice-President of Australian College of Surgery Steven Dean, who visited Mahajan, has supported the medical services offered to the BJP leader.

Mahajan was being given best medical attention and the decision to operate him was appropriate, Dean said, adding: "I am impressed with the facilities here".

However, when asked about specific information on Mahajan's health, Dean said it was up to hospital authorities to inform about the developments.

Dean, who was on his way to Ahmedabad to attend a training course for doctors, visited Mahajan on the insistence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Son claims improvement:

Earlier in the day, Pramod Mahajan's son Rahul had said there was an 'improvement' in the BJP leader's health and thanked doctors for doing an excellent job.
