Madrid Masters: Gonzalez enters quarter-finals
Fernando Gonzalez had little problem in disposing of Argentine Juan Monaco.

Madrid: Last year's losing finalist Fernando Gonzalez breezed into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters on Thursday with an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 win over Argentine Juan Monaco.

The win also took the Chilean a step closer to securing his place at the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai for the second time in his career.

Gonzalez, who lost to Roger Federer in last year's final in Madrid, had little problem in disposing of Monaco, easing his way through the first set and then cranking up the pressure in the second to break twice and wrap up victory in an hour and eight minutes.

The Chilean, who also lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, will meet the winner of the match between Germany's Nicolas Kiefer and big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic in the last eight.

Later on Thursday, world No 2 Rafael Nadal faces the in-form British No. 1 Andy Murray in the stand-out match of the third round, while defending champion and world No. 1 Federer meets Argentine Guillermo Canas.

Third seed Novak Djokovic takes on Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, who beat fellow countryman Carlos Moya in the battle of the former world No. 1s on Wednesday.
